ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA TO APPLY FOR EWS CERTIFICATE
The applicants from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) who belong to the general category and not covered under the Government reservation quota must fulfil specific eligibility criteria to be eligible to apply for the EWS Certificate. Given below are the requirements set by the Central Government that determine the eligibility criteria of EWS Certificate.
- Applicant’s annual family income must be below INR 8 lakhs.
- He/she must not belong to any other reserved category ( SC/ST/OBC Central list)
- His/her family must not be entitled to agricultural land/lands of more than 5 acres.
- If he/she resides in an apartment or a rented room, it must not be larger than 1000 sq. ft.
- If the residential area falls under a notified municipality sector, the area of residence should be less than 100 square yards. However, if it falls under a non-notified municipality sector, the size of the house must be less than 200 square yards.

The Government of India has proposed a nominal application fee for EWS certificate. The application fee varies from state to state. 2. What is a EWS Certificate?
EWS Certificate issued by the Government to the citizens or households with a low-level income. Though there are other factors in deciding the financial status of the applicant/household, the income of the applicant is the prime criteria in issuing the EWS Certificate.
3. Am I eligible to apply for the EWS certificate if I belong to the OBC category?
Answer: No. Applicants from the OBC Categories are not eligible to apply for EWS Certificates as the persons belonging to OBC/ST/SC etc. are already covered under various government welfare schemes.

The candidates from the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category are eligible 10% reservation whereas the Non-creamy layer candidates from the Other Backward Communities (OBC) Category are eligible for 27% reservation.
Apart from the reservation, the OBC candidates are given many other benefits like Age relaxation, Relaxation in the number of chances to clear the exams, Relaxation in Cut off marks etc. The income of the applicant is the main criteria in determining the EWS status of the applicant, whereas the income of the candidate is not a factor in OBC Reservation.
